Tai Chi Improves Knee Osteoarthritis Pain in Elderly

Elderly individuals who have osteoarthritis of the knee may experience improvement in pain and physical function if they practice Tai Chi regularly, according to researchers from Tufts University School of Medicine. Tai Chi may also help patients with osteoarthritis enjoy better mood and overall health.

Knee osteoarthritis is a common ailment among the elderly in the United States, affecting about 4.3 million adults older than 60, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC also notes that about 50 percent of adults may develop symptoms of osteoarthritis in at least one knee by age 85. This disease can have a severe impact on mobility and self-efficacy, increase the risk of falls and fractures, and contribute to feelings of depression.
