AARP’s Public Policy Institute released “Planning Complete Streets for an Aging America” which discusses “complete streets”. Complete streets are safe and convenient for people of all ages and abilities. The allow travel by car, foot, bike and transit.
Roadway engineers and planners should design roads with complete streets in mind, that is, for older adult drivers and pedestrians.
2/3 of planners and engineers have not yet begun considering the needs of older road users. 40% percent of adults age 50 and older report inadequate sidewalks near their homes; about 50% cannot cross main roads. Among other items, the report recommends federal highway design handbook changes.
